Paul E. Thompson Photograph Collection, 1937-1941

The collection contains black and white photographs of adolescent students and student activities at the Eklutna Vocational School, where Paul Thompson taught during the late 1930’s. Most of the students are identified. The collection contains many scenic color slides of glaciers, totems, landscapes, mountain ranges in locations throughout Alaska – the Interior, South Central, the Aleutians, the Pribilof Islands, and Southeast. The slides begin at number 146.

The images show the areas around Mary’s Igloo and Teller, including schools, classrooms and students. Also shown are reindeer, Eskimos (many are identified), fishing activity, a cemetery, native housing, Teller reindeer station and the Lutheran Mission construction. The first 33 photos were taken in the Teller area (PCA0138-1 through PCA0138-33), the remaining were taken in Mary's Igloo (PCA0138-34 through PCA0138-115).

This collection includes Louis Shotridge’s notes on 5x7 cards with information concerning such subjects as Tlingit clans, genealogy, hostage/slave, Lhich-Naedi House, Shungoo-Kaedi House, geographic names, photographs, specimen (Tlingit artifact descriptions), warfare, and the itinerary of Louis Shotridge while gathering information from 1922-1924. Also included is a copy Shotridge’s map of study sites and a letter of the map’s transfer from the University of Pennsylvania Museum.

This collection contains 59 - 8 x 10" black and white photographs of Tlingit chiefs, Tlingit villages, and village activities as well as 2 portraits of photographer G.T. Emmons. In addition to the prints, there are 232 views (photocopies) of early Tlingit people, their activities and villages. The photographs are by J.M. Blankenberg, G.T. Emmons, Richard Maynard, C.F. Newcombe, and J.E. Worden.

To the Klondike: The Diary of a Young Man, 1898 March 1 to Sept. 7

Diary of nineteen-year-old Leo R. Healy, who with his brother George Healy, journeyed to the Yukon Klondike Gold Fields in 1898. Arriving in Seattle after a train trip from Chicago, Illinois, the two brothers bought their outfits and voyaged to Skagway, then over the Chilkoot Pass to Dawson. After a brief stay, seeing conditions in Dawson, they returned home via the Yukon and St. Michael.
