From Wendell Oswalt’s personal notes about slides in this collection: “The North Star was a small wooden B.I.A. vessel that played an important role in early South Pole explorations. They assembled an airplane on board to make the first flight over the South Pole. There are numerous published accounts about the flight.” [referring to slides 118-119]...

Native Alaskan villagers and villages, landscapes, glaciers, railroad, early automobile, hunting camp, moose, bear and big horn sheep, porcupine, walrus. Photographer or collector unknown.

Also included in the collection is the three part article “The Diary of An Alaskan Trip” by R.J. DeLano who was a member of the hunting trip to Alaska.

The scrapbook contains correspondence, announcements, photographs, and records belonging to Mr. and Ms. Paine covering their courtship, marriage, and Mr. Paine’s fatal aircraft accident.
