Scope and Contents The Alaska pipeline photographic-history project extended from 1974-1977. The objective of the project was to record on photographic film and on audio tape the history of Alaska during construction of the Alaskan pipeline. The focus was people : those directly involved with the construction and those whose lives were affected significantly by the new pipeline. Photographs were probably all taken during the winter of 1897-1898, when Samuel Call sailed on the U. S. Revenue Cutter Service BEAR as part of the Overland Relief Expedition to rescue the 265 whalers whose ships were trapped in the ice near Point Barrow. Several of the images show the BEAR.

Fort Gibbon was the detail headquarters and distributing point of the U.S. military telegraph and cable service. Photographs include views of Tanana, Fort Gibbon, Ruby, Gulkana and Valdez. Copy negatives are available for all views. Photocopied documents containing a listing of Pittman’s military service and his Alaska journals are included in a separate folder.

News clippings and biographical material from the donor. Typescripts of 12 poems and two stories labeled “Tales of the Kuskokwim.” One poem, “The Pioneer” is handwritten. Additionally, there is a letter from Cone’s great nephew and two photographs of C. Edward Cone.

The collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings about Point Baker, Zieske v Butz, buffer strips on streams, legislation/lobbying materials, state and federal agency memos and position papers on salmon stream protection measures; resolutions of the United Fisherman of Alaska, the State Legislature, conservation groups; testimony of Alan Stein before the U.S. Senate and House Committee of Agriculture, his notes and other materials.
