Scope and Contents

News clippings and biographical material from the donor. Typescripts of 12 poems and two stories labeled “Tales of the Kuskokwim.” One poem, “The Pioneer” is handwritten. Additionally, there is a letter from Cone’s great nephew and two photographs of C. Edward Cone.

Biographical

Charles Edward Cone, born in Kansas in 1862, spent 1886 to 1927 prospecting, fishing, and trapping in various locations in Alaska and British Columbia, with intermittent trips, before retiring to La Push, Washington. While mining on the Hartman River, he became known as “The Bard of the Kuskokwim.” His one book of published poems is entitled Beyond the Skyline.

Donated by C. Harvey Pitman, great nephew of Charles Edward Cone, on March 18, 1980.

Processing Information

This collection has been described at the item level. All items have been placed in Mylar, into a pH-neutral folder, and then into an archival box. Two photographs were donated along with the manuscripts and biographical clippings. The photographs were separated and catalogued in the Core Portrait files. The originals were re-integrated into the collection in April 2014.
