Scope and Contents

Fort Gibbon was the detail headquarters and distributing point of the U.S. military telegraph and cable service. Photographs include views of Tanana, Fort Gibbon, Ruby, Gulkana and Valdez. Copy negatives are available for all views. Photocopied documents containing a listing of Pittman’s military service and his Alaska journals are included in a separate folder.

Biographical Note

D.D. Pittman served 30 years in the military from July 7, 1898 until July 27, 1921. He was Chief Telegraph Officer and Cashier with the U.S. Army Signal Corp at Fort Gibbon and Valdez, Alaska between June 1912 and March 1917. He died in 1958 at the age of 83.

Acquisition

The D. D. Pittman collection was donated by daughter, Marcia Johann, in 1977. Documents were transferred from Historical Collections backlog and added in 2002. Accession No. 1977-009.

Photographs digitized and available for viewing via Alaska's Digital Archives: 1-32, 34-36, 38-48, 50-63, 65

Processing Information

The images were numbered and housed in mylar. Documents were housed in an archival folder outside of box.
