Scope and Contents Dr. Ushanoff and Mrs. Ashia Doll (Dogopolov) visited Nikalaevsk on the Kenai Peninsula in August, 1981 during their trip to Alaska for the dedication of the Dolgopolov Collection. Mrs. Doll and Dr. Ushanoff looked forward to visiting Nikolaevsk as they were familiar with the area from which the Old Believers had come. Two photograph albums, two separate trips: one on the Revenue Cutter Perry in 1902-8; and the other aboard the Revenue Cutter Thetis in 1908. Siberian and Alaskan Arctic circle villages, coastal Alaskan and British Columbian towns, including fish racks, waterways, Pavlof Mountain eruption, glaciers, sod houses, Eskimo burial site, totem poles.

The 2 ¾ x 4 ½ and 2 ½ x 3 ½ inch black and white images were taken and/or collected by Lillian Vader while on a cruise to Alaska and British Columbia during July of 1927, aboard the S.S. Princess Louise. The photographs depict her journey through Inside Passage, the communities of Juneau, Douglas, Haines, Sitka, Petersburg and Alert Bay, and into the Yukon Territory. Fourteen of the images are Winter and Pond photographs and 3 images were clipped from publications.

Includes correspondence, instructions on missionary conduct, consecration and ordination papers of Innokentii, reports, memos, copybook, and Aleut translations; correspondents include: Tikhov [?], Bishop of the Aleutians and North America, Filip Kopylov, and Archimandrite Nikodim [?], Abbot of the Ascension Monastery, Irkutsk.

Images of Alaska towns, some are picture postcards : Ketchikan, Metlakatla, Fort Gibbon, Tanana, Fairbanks, Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, and Wrangell Narrows. Featured are Native Alaskan totem poles (Sitka) and Yost’s Roadhouse at the Summit of Delta River, six views of Navy vessels, the Pulpit Rocks and a Metlakatla church. The images are undated with the exception of two; they are dated 1908 and 1912. The photographer/collector is unknown.

Content Description The Michael Z.
