Scope and Contents The images in the album reflect the surveying activities along the Southeast Alaska border of Canada by the International Boundary Commission in 1908-1909. The photographs were taken by the survey leader, O.M. Leland, who provided handwritten captions for the photos. The slides in this collection were taken by Elliot during a trip to Alaska with his friend Michael Herbstman in the summer of 1980. Stops included Juneau, Douglas, Glacier Bay Lodge, Anchorage, McKinley Park, Chatanika, Tok, Valdez, Whittier, Portage, Whitehorse, Skagway, Haines, Petersburg, Wrangell, Ketchikan, and Saxman.

Includes list of teachers in Juneau schools, 1885-1945 as taken from the newspapers, Douglas teachers and enrollments, 1887-1902, teachers and enrollment for Juneau Seventh Day Adventist School, 1959-1973, photos of schools, and information on school events; Section I, Juneau City Schools, 1885-1945, is largely based on the unpublished History of the Juneau Public Schools by A.B. Phillips, superintendent of Juneau Public Schools from 1934-1947.

Activities of a gold mining party, which landed at Saint Michael, built a steamboat in July of 1898, traveled up the Yukon and Koyukuk Rivers, completed a cabin in early October, and prospected for gold above the Arctic Circle. Included are photographs of another party of prospectors, the Beaver Party, which followed a similar path, beginning at Saint Michael and wintering above the Arctic Circle. The photographs are not in chronological order.

The views, taken ca. 1919, include 13 photos by John E. Thwaites, a Cordova view by C. E. Rosswog, Valdez view by Philip Wischmeyer and Kenai Peninsula views of A Summons. There are also views of Latouche, Ketchikan, Nushagak, Kodiak, and Seward. There are a few views of canneries and cannery ships; the U.S. Hatchery at Letnik, Alaska; U.S. Navy Radio Station at Wood Island; C. Emswiler, hunting guide at Seward, native dwellings, views of native life and reindeer herding.
