Scope and Contents
The slides in this collection were taken by Elliot during a trip to Alaska with his friend Michael Herbstman in the summer of 1980. Stops included Juneau, Douglas, Glacier Bay Lodge, Anchorage, McKinley Park, Chatanika, Tok, Valdez, Whittier, Portage, Whitehorse, Skagway, Haines, Petersburg, Wrangell, Ketchikan, and Saxman.

Biographical Note
Elliot Hirshon was born October 22, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York. His father Irving Hirshon was a professional photographer who operated Hirshon Studios in Merrick on Long Island, where Elliot grew up. Elliot Hirshon had a decades-long career as a public servant in the United States, including stops at the Social Security Administration from 1975 to 1981, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General from 1983 to 2007, and the Office of the Attorney General of the State of New York from 2007 to 2009 and again from 2011 to 2016. He married Irene Jedrlinic in 1983 and they lived in Forest Hills, New York, where they raised their son, Nicholas Hirshon, an author and journalism professor. Elliot Hirshon died in the Bronx, New York, on February 6, 2018.

Sunday 20 July
Depart Seattle/Tacoma International airport via Wien Air
Alaska flight #81 at 8:20am for jet service to Juneau.
Arrive Juneau, 9:35am.
Present your tour voucher to the HERTZ RENT A CAR counter in
the baggage claim area. A friendly welcome and your Hertz
car will be waiting.
A short drive down the Glacier Highway will take you to
downtown Juneau and your hotel.

Monday 21 July
Use your Hertz car to explore Juneau and Douglas Island. Be
sure to visit the Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska’s only ‘drive
to’ glacier.

Tuesday 22 July
Return your Hertz car to the Juneau airport in time to check in
for your departure flight. You will be expected to pay for
gasoline used, if the car is not returned ‘full.’
Depart Juneau via Alaska #65 at 11:20 am.
Arrive Gustavus, 11:45 am, where you will be met and transferred
by coach 15 miles to the beautiful Glacier Bay Lodge.
After lunch (on your own), you board the M/V GLACIER BAY
EXPOLRER, your mini-class cruise ship, to depart at 1:45pm.
You cruise through magnificent Glacier Bay National Monument
to the foot of tide water glaciers to spend the night.
Wednesday 23 July
Early this morning, you cruise back to the Lodge by way of
the bird rookeries of Marble Island. Return to the
Lodge in time to transfer to the airport for your departure.
Depart Gustavus via Alaska #72 at 12:15 pm.
Arrive Juneau, 12:40 pm.
Depart Juneau via Wien Air Alaska #89 at 6:50 pm.
Arrive Anchorage, 7:30 pm, and present your voucher to the
HERTZ RENT A CAR counter in the baggage claim area to secure
your car.
A short drive will take you to downtown Anchorage, and your
confirmed accommodations.

Thursday 24 July
Today, with your MILEPOST Guide Book and your Hertz rental
car, you can begin to explore Alaska.

This morning, the M/V BARTLETT departs Valdez at 7:30 am. You
have confirmed reservations for your passage and car.
Vehicle line-up time will be at least 6:30 am, but it would
be best to check this time on arrival at Valdez.
Cruise to Whittier via the spectacular Columbia Glacier.
Arrive Whittier, 2:30 pm, where you transfer to the Alaska
Railroad for a short rail ride to Portage. Continue on by
car to your location this evening.
See your tour vouchers or use the HotelPass voucher for
accommodations tonight.
Thursday 31 July
On your last day in Anchorage, plan to return your car to the
Hertz area at the airport with time to check in for your
departure flight.
When returning your car, you will be expected to pay for any
additional miles used and gasoline, if not returned ‘full’.
Depart Anchorage via Wien Air Alaska #73 at 8:00 am.
Arrive Fairbanks, 8:55 am.
Depart Fairbanks via Wien Air Alaska #82 at 12:50 pm.
Arrive Whitehorse, 4:10 pm.
ATLAS TRAVEL TOURS will meet you and transfer you from the
airport to your hotel. Call WHITEHORSE MOTORS U-DRIVE on
arrival at 667-2505 or 667-2003 for delivery of your car.

Friday 1 August
Explore Whitehorse, the largest city of Canada’s Yukon, with
your car to see the many interesting sights.

Saturday 2 August
This morning, you depart Whitehorse via the White Pass & Yukon
Route narrow gauge railway at 9:45 am. Please check-in with
plenty of time to exchange your vouchers at the ticket counter.
Arrive Skagway, 5:00 pm, where you will transfer from the rail
depot to the Alaska ferry terminal.
Baggage handling service is not provided, but a transfer cart
is available from the terminal to the ship car deck. Please
claim your baggage as soon as it is on board, as the ferry
system is not responsible for lost baggage.
Present your vouchers to the terminal prior to boarding. After
boarding, please go immediately to the purser’s counter to
secure your stateroom for the voyage.
Depart Skagway via the M/V MALASPINA at 6:30 pm.
Sunday 3 August
Cruising southward through the beautiful inland waterways of
Southeastern Alaska, you will make port calls at the coastal
communities of Haines, Juneau, Petersburg and Wrangell.
Your ferry arrives in Ketchikan at about 10:00 pm.
KETCHIKAN SIGHTSEEING will transfer you from the Alaska ferry
terminal to your hotel.

hotel desk for you

Monday 4 August
Explore the totem parks of Ketchikan and Saxman, plus the
collection of poles at Totem Bight.

Tuesday 5 August
Today you will return your car to the Ketchikan airport via
shuttle ferry. This ferry departs from the Alaska ferry
terminal location (the shuttle ferry ramp is to the far left)
twice each hour, 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after the
hour.
You should take the ferry that departs at 11:45 am.
Return the car keys to the HERTZ RENT A CAR counter at the
airport, together with you tour voucher.
Depart Ketchikan via Wien Air Alaska #86 at 1:10 pm.
Arrive Seattle/Tacoma International airport, where your
Alaska tour concludes, at 3:00pm.
Processing Information
The slides were removed from three slide trays. Original order maintained. The slides were placed in Archival slide preserver sheets, then into acid free folders, and into an archival box. Slides were scanned by donor. The identifiers for the slides scanned by the donor were renumbered to match the collection numbering. The collection has been described at the item level. Itinerary of the trip is included.
