Biographical / Historical

Phil and Peggie Holdsworth were married in Fairbanks in 1936. After Phil received his college degree in mining engineering and geology, they went to the Philippines. In 1937, Phil was employed as mill superintendent by the Mindanao Mother Lode Mine in Suriagao. When the Japanese invaded the Philippines, Phil offered his services to the Army and continued living and fighting in the hills until captured on July 1, 1942. Peggie and Phil were prisoners of war in Santo Tomas, Manila and other locations until their release on May 8, 1945. Phil Holdsworth served as Alaska's Territorial Commissioner of Mines, 1952-1959 and Commissioner of Natural Resources, 1959-1967.
