George L. Harrington Letter, 1909

Scope and Contents

The George L. Harrington letter was written at the Alaska-Canada boundary near Eagle City, Alaska, July 3, 1909. George Harrington describes his Alaska experience, while working with the Alaska Boundary Survey, and includes some humor current for that time period. The letter was sent to Mrs. W.E. Harrington of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The pages are written on birch bark and should not be handled as they are very fragile. There is a transcription that can be read instead.

This collection includes the album “Record of Trip To Alaska” which documents the voyage of Marcia A. Truesdell, in 1940, on the C.P.R. S.S. Princess Louise and her trip on the White Pass & Yukon Railroad. Included is information, photographs, and post cards detailing her visits to Victoria, Vancouver, Alert Bay, Prince Rupert, Ketchikan, Wrangell, Taku Glacier, Juneau, Skagway, and White Horse.

Gibson H. Gile Papers, 1943

Scope and Contents The papers are comprised of typescripts of 164 letters written by Mr. Gile to his family in 1943 while he worked as a bookkeeper and timekeeper in the Yukon for the E. G. Elliot Company, one of several contractors building the Alcan. The letters reflect the routine of being a general worker on the project, but also mirror the concerns of a person far from home in a rugged wilderness during World War II. A typed manuscript of a daily journal written by a nameless author who journeyed to the Klondike Goldfields over the White Pass Trail out of Skagway, Alaska, during the Klondike Gold Rush. The diary describes the climate, people, general trail conditions and the weather along the journey.
