Scope and Contents
Views of Nome, Anvil Creek, Unalaska and SS GARONNE; Eskimo and Athapascan portraits.
All of the prints are 6 ½" x 8 ½" in size and are mounted on 11" x 13" mount boards. Four of the views were taken by E.A. Hegg, an early Alaskan photographer.

Biographical
John L. Gillespie, Sr. sailed from Seattle to Nome on the SS GARONNE in 1900. He worked as a surveyor during the summer of 1900 for a mining company that had been organized in Nevada, Iowa.
Before leaving for Nome, Mr. Gillespie graduated from Iowa State College with a degree in electrical engineering. He later obtained a law degree from the State University of Iowa and practiced law for over fifty years in Des Moines, Iowa.

These photographs were donated to the State Library in 1982 by Mary G. Whiting, Mr. Gillespie’s daughter. (Acc. #1982-009)
Processing Information
Each photograph has been placed in Mylar. The photographs were divided into two groups and then placed into archival folders.
