Special file on Alaska history (1764-1967) collected by the Alaska Purchase Centennial Commission for the celebration, 1967. Selections include portraits of historical figures, images from early exploration, towns, industry, natural resources and environment, Alaska native communities and art, and maps.

Scope and Contents Most of the photographs were taken by Alaskan Engineering Commission (AEC) photographers, professional photographers hired to record railroad construction. In addition to construction, people, camps, buildings, and communities along the railroad are shown. The collection includes a series of agricultural photographs, from the Matanuska Valley and Fairbanks, among others. Images of government officials are also identified. Scope and Contents This collection of 85 hand-tinted lantern slides advertised The Alaska Railroad's Tour #2 in the first year of operation for the Alaska Railroad, 1923. The slides are imprinted with “Alaska Railroad, Washington D.C.” The tour starts at the Alaska Steamship’s pier in Seattle and continues up through the Inside Passage to Seward by steamship. These records primarily include scrapbooks of newspaper clippings describing the work of the U.S. Alaska Road Commission, 1915-1921 and U.S. Bureau of Public Roads, 1963-1974.

Includes miscellaneous records concerning the Savage Bridge Project in Mt.McKinley National Park (1950's-1960's); earthquake damage to the highway system in 1964; several project engineer field diaries for the Starrigavan Bay Crossing, Sitka Highway.

Content Description The inventory lists locations and general subject areas contained in each volume but individual photographs are only described for Vol. 139. The lantern slides (Vol. 107B) depict the construction of the Alaska Highway. 100, 35mm color slides (Vol. 40) were taken during the opening of Haines Highway and also include miscellaneous highway scenes from Circle to Homer. The 64 slides in this collection were taken during the 1970s and depict locations in Southeast Alaska and the Yukon. Most of the slides are commercially produced and are part of a series depicting “The Inside Passage.” Subjects range from fishing to specific locations such as glaciers, Baranoff[Baranof] Warm Springs, and Carcross, Skagway, Juneau, and Chatham Strait.
