This collection contains a 16 page manuscript by William J. Betts, titled “Captain Castner of Chilkoot” and eleven 8x10 black and white images to accompany the manuscript. The photographs depict activities at Chilkoot Barracks, 1935-1937, and Colonel Castner.
Captain George H. Whitney Photograph Collection, 1886-1910
Captain Whitney's career with the Inspection Service took him to many Alaskan ports. The collection of 184 photographs covers numerous coastal communities from Ketchikan to Golovnin Bay, including many views from the Aleutian Islands. There are also views of the Tanana River, hunting and fishing, canneries, ships, Russian Orthodox churches, a voyage on the S.S. DORA in 1907, and totem poles.
Captain Victor Seidelhuber Papers, ca. 1940s
This collection contains several hand drawn maps showing cross sections of headlands and navigational courses, navigational calculations, and hand drawn charts of how to dock a vessel at various Southeast Alaska canneries. The first folder has instructions on how to use the captain’s portable pelorus. There are miscellaneous notes and correspondence regarding his work and a book of tables for navigation.
