Scope and Contents

Two photograph albums, two separate trips: one on the Revenue Cutter Perry in 1902-8; and the other aboard the Revenue Cutter Thetis in 1908. Siberian and Alaskan Arctic circle villages, coastal Alaskan and British Columbian towns, including fish racks, waterways, Pavlof Mountain eruption, glaciers, sod houses, Eskimo burial site, totem poles.

Scope and Contents

The 2 ¾ x 4 ½ and 2 ½ x 3 ½ inch black and white images were taken and/or collected by Lillian Vader while on a cruise to Alaska and British Columbia during July of 1927, aboard the S.S. Princess Louise. The photographs depict her journey through Inside Passage, the communities of Juneau, Douglas, Haines, Sitka, Petersburg and Alert Bay, and into the Yukon Territory. Fourteen of the images are Winter and Pond photographs and 3 images were clipped from publications.

Includes correspondence, instructions on missionary conduct, consecration and ordination papers of Innokentii, reports, memos, copybook, and Aleut translations; correspondents include: Tikhov [?], Bishop of the Aleutians and North America, Filip Kopylov, and Archimandrite Nikodim [?], Abbot of the Ascension Monastery, Irkutsk.

Images of Alaska towns, some are picture postcards : Ketchikan, Metlakatla, Fort Gibbon, Tanana, Fairbanks, Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, and Wrangell Narrows. Featured are Native Alaskan totem poles (Sitka) and Yost’s Roadhouse at the Summit of Delta River, six views of Navy vessels, the Pulpit Rocks and a Metlakatla church. The images are undated with the exception of two; they are dated 1908 and 1912. The photographer/collector is unknown.

Views of Cordova, Chitina and McCarthy in the late 1920's. There are also views of the Copper River and Northwestern Railroad trains and crews, bridges, tunnels, copper mining, cabins, sleds and sled dogs and community activities.

Data and technical reports related to water quality and sewage treatment systems in arctic and subarctic permafrost regions of rural Alaska. Water sanitation, weather data, construction, heating and ventilation, glacial flood flow.

Content Description The Michael Z. Vinokouroff Collection spans the years 1764 to 1983, with the bulk of the material falling into the period from 1911 (his first published poetry) through 1940 (his trip to Alaska). Although many files are fragmentary, the wide range of material in the Collection may be useful to researchers interested in the Russian Orthodox Church, native languages of Siberia and Alaska, the Russian emigre community, or the life and scholarly pursuits of one Russian emigre with special ties...

Collection spans such subjects as Eastern Siberia, Japan, Russian America, the Russian Orthodox church, Russian emigre life, Russian priests, bishops and clergy, Alaska scenic views, Michael, Anastasia, George, Elena and Eugenia Vinokouroff, Vinokouroff’s associates and friends, Russian authors and literary figures. The collection includes engravings, carte de vistas, postcards, photostats and photographs.

Register information requested from visitor varies with each volume, but could include date of visit, name, business, interested in, home address, and Seattle address. Volume one inside page, handwritten, “Alaskans Only Indexed Alphabetically;” includes the date, name, Alaska address (or sometimes a Yukon Territory address) and city address of the visitor.
