Scope and Contents

This collection of photographs records the damage done to Fairbanks and surrounding areas at the time of the Chena River flood in August of 1967. The river, which runs through the city of Fairbanks, flooded buildings, covered streets and damaged bridges. The Elliot and Steese Highways and the Chena Hot Springs Road sustained roadbed and bridge damage due to the flooding. A preliminary report, written by Gene O. Hanna is included with the photographs.

Scope and Contents In 1948, the USCG NORTHWIND departed Seattle to head up the Bering Sea Patrol. The patrol was responsible for improving the Coast Guard navigation outposts in the Aleutian Islands, replenishing food and fuel supplies and providing mail service. Scope and Contents This collection contains views relating to the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in Alaska supervised by the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads, Alaska Road Commission, U.S. Federal Highway Administration and the Alaska State Department of Highways. The original collection contained 118, 3 x 5 photographs. The images provide valuable information about Alaska communications activities, including telegraph construction, campsites, roadhouses and U.S. telegraph stations.

Abstract INTRODUCTION:This selection of photographs was obtained from the National Archives and Records Service, Washington, D. C. and are part of their Record Group #126. The views show the colonists' construction of homes and other buildings. Work activities include farming and gardening. Scope and Contents These views of the trip made by the Revenue Cutter Bear in 1905 were located in the Alaska State Museum. Copy negatives have been made for 86 views selected from the 204, for their content and reproduction quality. Also, there were several views of some subjects, and the best were reproduced. Scope and Contents V.V. Ushanoff produced an 81-page document titled "Russian America," a pictorial interpretation of Russian American history. This collection includes the document and 121 accompanying color slides.
