Bart Thane Letter, 1899
This folder contains a letter to his family (parents and sister Laura), describing his life in Sumdum as head of part of the mining operations; he mentions Windm [Windham], Silver Creek, bear and deer hunting, and halibut and trout fishing. [Sumdum Chief Mine at Sumdum. Dated July 22, 1899, addressed to “My Dear Folks at Home” and signed “Your Som and Bro Bart Thane”] (3 handwritten pages on two sheets of Sumdum Mining Company letterhead)

"The Grand Tour" Photographs, ca. 1905-1915
Little is known about the photographer or time period in which the photos were taken. However, according to Peter Corey, curator of the Sheldon Jackson Museum, the photos could not have been taken prior to 1905 due to the placement of the Son-i-hat totem and house posts in two of the photos. The Log of an Alaskan Pioneer, 1901
Hoeppner tells of sailing to Alaska in 1901, construction of the Red Salmon Cannery Co. cannery on the Ugashik River, Bristol Bay region. He describes fishing, canneries in the area, people, and activity during the winter until the following fishing season.

The collection contains photographs primarily of Dutch Harbor-Unalaska region. There are photographs of whale butchering, native Alaskans in Savoonga and Gambell on St. Lawrence Island. There are also photos of King Island, U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Shosco in Juneau, and a few postcards including one of the Post-Rogers airplane disaster. Thompson was probably in Alaska in 1938-1939.
