Scope and Contents This album consists primarily of photographs taken during the construction of Ft. Egbert, a fort established near the town of Eagle, Alaska, to maintain law and order during the Klondike gold rush, ca. 1899-1912. Ft. Egbert was a vital link in the Washington - Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System (WAMCATS) from 1902-1911. The images show construction, transportation and arrival of goods by steamer, activities and personnel around the Fort, views of Eagle, Nome, St. Michael....

Many of the photographs are of soldiers from the 22nd Infantry, A and F Company, at Fort William H. Seward in Haines, Alaska, 1908-1909. The images include portraits of the soldiers, the men reading and playing cards in their barracks, and the 22nd Infantry Regimental Band and their instruments. One photograph is an image of Co. F leaving March 27, 1908 for Treadwell, Alaska, for duty in connection with a miners’ strike there.

This collection contains sixty black and white photographs. Several are commercial photos by photographer Ordway. The rest are photos taken and collected by Edward Foster. The photographs are of buildings in Haines, crew members, and construction of the Alaska Highway near Haines.

Scope and Contents The photographs include fur and fox farming scenes from Brothers Island, Sumner Island, Behrs Island [Chain Is.?], Donkey Bay, Kake Cannery, Pybus Bay and Monte Carlo Fox Farm. There are also images along the Inside Passage, including Petersburg, Wrangell, Ketchikan, and Kake. Collection includes memorabilia (2 items), portraits, photographs of Juneau and Douglas people, government and social activities and scenics by various photographers (Ordway, Alaska Photo Co., Elite Studio), commercial and unidentified. The collection also includes a Camp Fire Girls certificate (1929), a Douglas High School diploma, 1928, and an image of Will Rogers and Wiley Post.

The collection contains views of tourists and touring cars from the early 20th century, hotels and roadhouses along the Fairbanks-Valdez Trail. Locations include Paxson, Gulkana, Copper Creek, Salchaket, Sourdough, Kenny Lake, McCarty, Meiers, Munson, Rapids and Youst. Also included are a few images of the Black Wolf Squadron. Most individuals and community businesses are identified.

Records of fur trading with the Alaska Natives, weather, weather damage, provisions, interactions with surrounding inhabitants.
