This collection contains 9 letters written by Jacob Keffeler while living in Alaska during and after the Klondike Gold Rush. Included are family history documents put together by descendents of Jacob Keffeler.

This hand-made photograph album titled “Nome, 1900” was made by Vivian Leeterman or Leederman and given to Keith in 1900. The photographs are from Nome, ca. 1898 to 1900, with the exception of one image of the Chilkoot Pass and a formal portrait of Mr. Keith dated 1936. Scenes of Nome’s 1900 flood, Nome ‘sourdoughs’ and several beach mining images are included. The collection includes a few Hegg photographs and several from Hammond Photo on Steadman Ave., Nome.

Scope and Contents The first 1,086 images were taken by Edward Keithahn while living and/or teaching in Shishmaref, Kake, Hydaburg, Wrangell and Juneau, from 1923-th 1940’s. They include Tlingit and Hyda artifacts from the Alaska Territorial Museum, Alaska Natives and traditional activities, fishing, steamers, canneries, the Wrangell Institute. Content Description The collection reflects the Keller family and their experiences while living in Huslia and traveling through the interior regions of Alaska. Descriptions, written by Mrs. Keller, capture the residents of the villages and their daily activities and contain much historical information. The collection includes views of Huslia, Tetlin, Minto, Tanana, Alaskan villages on the Koyukuk River, Koyukon families and members of the Episcopal church, 1956-1963. The collection contains 90 images, most are black and white prints; a few are sepia. Many of the photos, though unsigned, are probably by Elbridge W. Merrill and depict the Sitka area, native culture, Sheldon Jackson Museum, the Sitka Industrial School, and scenic views, ca. 1885-1904. Non-Alaska photos include groups of people, some school children, and several unidentified portraits.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS

Locations include towns and villages on the Kenai Peninsula, Kodiak, Interior Alaska, Southeast Alaska. Subjects are many and varied and include airplanes, float planes, Alaska Natives, ships, glaciers, fishing, mining and wildlife. Many of the photo postcards are captioned and/or are inscribed on the versos.

Scope and Contents Black and white photographs of Northern Alaska and Nome, circa 1905-1910, during the gold rush. The bulk of the images are of Charles L. Kemp and Mrs. A.S. Kemp in Nome at the Kemp store, hunting on the Bering Sea, reindeer and dog sleds, school and social gatherings, and theater productions. The photographs primarily concern life in Nome, Alaska, in 1910, but have some pictures of other places in Alaska. The black and white photographs in this collection show democratic presidential nominee Senator John F. Kennedy delivering speeches at various venues in Anchorage and Palmer, Alaska. Other items included are two newspaper articles from the Anchorage Daily Times describing Senator Kennedy’s visit and internet copies of the speeches he gave at the fairgrounds in Palmer, Alaska, and the Edgewater Motel in Anchorage, Alaska.
