Content Description

Black and white photographs of aircraft, Alaskan geography, boats and ships, towns and cities, and people. Included in the scrapbook are photographs of the recovery efforts related to Carl Ben Eielson’s wrecked aircraft in Siberia. According to the donor, the intent of the photo album was to document a young man’s Alaskan experience and impress his soon-to-be bride, Louise Grant.

Content Description The images show the mission at Allakeket, the residents (Koyukon and Athapascans, missionaries, teachers) of the area, Alatna, Wiseman, Huslia, and life and traditional activities in those areas. The images predominantly show people and most are identified. The captions provide much history of the areas and genealogy. Scope and Contents The mostly 2 ½ x 3 ½ in. black and white images show Evan Hill and his friends (soldiers and civilians) in Company “A” and “C” during the years of World War II, early 1940’s, in Haines (Chilkoot Barracks), Skagway, Moses Point, Dutch Harbor, Fairbanks, St. Paul Island, Klukwan and Carcross B.C. Images include military camp scenes, officers and officers’ quarters, reindeer herds, roads, Eskimos, sealing, Eskimo dancing and singing, and other unidentified people and places. Scope and Contents The images in the album reflect the surveying activities along the Southeast Alaska border of Canada by the International Boundary Commission in 1908-1909. The photographs were taken by the survey leader, O.M. Leland, who provided handwritten captions for the photos. Areas photographed include the Unuk, Leduc, and Blue Rivers, Smith Lake, Blue Lake, Gracey Creek, Lake Creek, Daley's Landing, and various other scenic views of mountains and glaciers in the Coast Mountains area of Southeastern...

The slides in this collection were taken by Elliot during a trip to Alaska with his friend Michael Herbstman in the summer of 1980. Stops included Juneau, Douglas, Glacier Bay Lodge, Anchorage, McKinley Park, Chatanika, Tok, Valdez, Whittier, Portage, Whitehorse, Skagway, Haines, Petersburg, Wrangell, Ketchikan, and Saxman.
