This collection of photographs shows Valdez, travel along the trail, dog and horse teams carrying the mail, freighting activity, some mining scenes, crossing the Yukon River and the riverboats. Identified roadhouses include Wortman's, Yost's, McDevitt's, Rapid's, Donnelley's and Manley Hot Springs Hotel.

Photographers whose views are in the collection include George Cantwell, Albert Johnson, P.S. Hunt, and C.L. Andrews.

Scope and Contents The Auke Bay Laboratory collection, Fisheries and Wildlife Research in Alaska, 1920s-1980s, is a valuable graphic history of the research done by the Auke Bay Laboratory and the earlier Fish and Wildlife Service in the state of Alaska. The collection of approximately 25,000 slides and 7,000 photographs features images from all over Alaska and a few from Seattle and Canada from the 1920s to the 1980s (bulk, 1950s to 1960s.) Scope and Contents The papers are comprised mainly of the personal correspondence and reminiscences of Dell Bachelder. A close correspondent was Alaska Representative and Senator Charles D. Jones; he was one of the three who cast Alaska's first electoral ballots for U.S. president in December 1960. This collection includes views of the Bachelders and their friends, mining activities in the Nome area, Nome community activities and scenics. Photographers represented are Lomen Bros., B.B. Dobbs, A.G. Simmer and K.O. Butler. The quality of the photographs ranges from very poor to good. Many views are postcard size.
