Scope and Contents

The Sheldon Jackson College Archives includes administrative files, correspondence, photographs, oral histories, moving images, and a wealth of information about the operations of the college beginning in the 1880s through its closure in 2007. Also includes the William Paul Collection, which relates primarily to Alaska Native land claims.

Several classification schemes and finding aids are available, each covering portions of the original collections.

The collection includes views of Haines and Fort William Henry Seward, the Chilkoot trail, Chilkat and Klukwan Natives, potlatch preparations, and Porcupine. Photographers represented in the collection include Stephen Sheldon (donor’s father), J. M. Blankenberg, H.C. Barley, Frank LaRoche, Elisabeth Sheldon Hakkinen.

Scope and Contents This collection primarily contains Case and Draper photograph contact prints created by Bea Shepard. Shepard made the prints from the glass plate negatives while they were in her care.She later donated the complete Case and Draper negative and print collection to the Alaska Historical Library in the name of her friend William Norton, from whom she had obtained the negatives. The photographs include many scenes from Fairbanks to Petersburg in the 1920’s, such as one of the City of Douglas fires, airplanes, the Detroit expedition, the pilot Wiley Post, the City of Fairbanks fire.. Locations include: Anchorage, Cordova, Douglas, Eklutna, Fairbanks, Haines, Juneau, Ketchikan, LaTouche, Petersburg, Seward, Sitka, Skagway, Valdez and Wrangell.

Papers include land indenture, agreements, affidavit, property description, correspondence and other documents concerning the Pederson Dairy and the Glacier Highway Electric Association from 1932-1987.

Scope and Contents The collection of stereographs depict dairy farming and local people in Juneau in the 1950’s, the Sherwood farm, members of the Glacier Highway Electric Association, Nugget Creek hydro electric plant, Juneau airport, skaters on Auke Lake, and quilt making. Also included are photographs of Tlingit Indians in regalia, perhaps taken at the first public dance they performed in Juneau.
