An ongoing collection of U.S. Coast Guard activities in Alaska, primarily the 17th Division, which includes slides and photographs of patrol, search and rescue, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, law enforcement, lighthouses, Coast Guard vessels, icebreakers, bases, aircraft, Bering Sea fisheries, individuals. The folder titled Lighthouses (folder 5) contains a range of photos mostly from 1915-ca. 1930s. The bulk dates for the collection are the 1980s.
USCGC STORIS (WMEC 38) and the 96-foot crabber ALASKAN MONARCH. ALASKAN MONARCH went aground Mar. 15, 1990 on the rocks of St. Paul Island. Six crew members hoisted to safety by a Kodiak-based HH-3F.

A drifting Soviet ice island, which formerly housed Research Station #31, was found drifting off the Alaskan coast Sept 29, 1991. The Soviets relocated the island in Oct. and removed the remaining buildings and hazardous materials from the island, which broke loose from the mainland in July.
