Biographical
The Juneau, Alaska Zenger family originally came from Kallmuenz, Bavaria. Sebastian B. Zenger (3/18/1862-4/15/1932) immigrated to the United States 5/31/1883. He moved to Milwaukie, Wisconsin where he met Bertha C. Heim (4/14/1865-1894). They were married 8/23/1886. They moved their family to Seattle, Washington about 1890. Bertha died in 1894. Sebastian remarried to Carrie Caroline Hammer (1870-1944).
In 1896 Sebastian sailed to near the present location of Whittier, Alaska in Prince William Sound. He hiked over the pass to Portage in Turnagain Arm, then proceeded up the shore of the arm to the present site of Anchorage. He followed Knik Arm to its head and continued inland to Sutton. Likely he was exploring the coal deposits in the area.
After hearing about the 1897 Klondike gold strike he departed for Dyea, Alaska. He packed for wages over the Chilkoot trail. In 1898 he moved to Juneau, Alaska and sent for his wife and four children. He was employed as a carpenter, owned a cigar shop and ran a grocery store.
Sebastian’s grandson Alfred Loy Zenger, Jr. is the donor of the Zenger family history and genealogy.
