Scope and Contents

The collection includes photographs of the Fairbanks and Nenana areas, Eskimos, Will Rogers-Wiley Post plane wreck, Mary Hansen's Siberian dog team, bears, and Army camps for road building. Also included are photographs of bridges in Alaska, Northwest Territories, and the Yukon. There are a number of photographs related to the Canol Road & Pipeline Project during the period of its construction from 1943 to 1945. The Canol photographs include images of various geographic features, construction camps, heavy equipment, and bridges.

Historical Note

The album may have been put together by “Uncle Matt,” who is mentioned in poems, written by Paul Miller Daskum, on the front and back covers of the album. No other information is available about the creator of the collection. Rumor has it that the photos belonged to Leonhard Seppala but, according to Jean Trainor, that is probably not the case.

Acquisition

The Alaska State Museum donated the collection to the Alaska State Library in December 2000. The album was originally donated to the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum, Nome, by Jean Trainor of Fairbanks. (Acc. No. 2000-77).

Processing Information

The photographs in the album were numbered. Inter-leaving was placed between the album pages. Loose photographs were housed in Mylar and placed in an acid free folder. An item level inventory is available. Two photographs of Leonhard Seppala were removed from the album and retained at the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum.
