Scope and Contents

The collection contains portraits and photographs of E.B. Barteau, family and friends, riverboats on the Yukon River, communities in Alaska and Yukon Territory, scenes from the White Pass and Yukon Railroad, the Klondike gold rush, Lake Bennett, Carcross, Atlin, Skagway and Whitehorse, several views of President Harding's visit to Nenana to drive the Golden Spike of the Alaska Railroad in 1923, glaciers, railroads, and mining, circa 1890s-1930s. Photographers represented in the collection include C.L. Andrews, L.H. Pedersen, F.A. Callarman (Frederick A. Callarman), Marsh and Grant Co., Hamacher and Doody (Edward J. and Jeremiah), Harry Beagle, and The Photo Album, Auburn.

Biographical Note

Ernest Bryant Barteau was born in Brookhaven, New York, on May 29, 1879. Around 1897, at the age of 18, he moved to the west coast. Barteau traveled between Seattle, Vancouver, B.C., Whitehorse, Y.T. and Tanana, Alaska. He became superintendent of the River Division of the White Pass & Yukon Railroad. Upon his retirement from the railroad in 1951, he moved to White Rock, B.C., where he lived until his death on August 16, 1966.

Acquisition

The collection was donated to the Alaska State Museum, December 20, 1967 by Esther and Bevan L. Hugh, executors, Barteau estate at the request of Maurice Barteau, E.B. Barteau’s son.

Some photographs in this collection have been digitized and are available to view via Alaska's Digital Archives.

The photographs are sleeved in Mylar and described at the item level. Many of the photographs are titled by the photographers. Information in brackets was supplied by Library staff.
