Scope and Contents

The collection includes three scrapbooks of clippings from the National Fisherman about the Alaskan fisheries from 1974-1980. The content of the clippings is described in the Background Note above. The collection also contains clippings on boat wrecks and boat design. Three Alaska Packers salmon labels are also included in Scrapbook 2.

Requests for permission to publish material from the collection must be discussed with the Librarian. Photocopying does not constitute permission to publish.

Historical Note

According to the collector, 1974-1980 were “important years in the history of the fishery. During that time two significant, political changes occurred: establishment of the 200-mile limit, and ‘limited entry.’ The groundfish industry was restarted, crab depletion became a serious issue, and there were many [mostly] international conflicts with Japan, the Soviet Union, Poland, Taiwan, Korea, Canada and Seattle.”
