Historical
The following is the History of Alaskan Arts & Crafts, Inc. as secured from the existing records on file:
In 1945 The Juneau Woman's Club with Mrs. James V. Cole as president and Alice Brandebury as Chairman of the Fine Arts Committee sponsored the first annual arts and crafts exhibit held in the Scottish Rite Temple, Juneau, Alaska.
This exhibit of the work of local artists and craftsmen was so successful that the club decided to continue stimulating workers toward greater creative activity by sponsoring another exhibit a year later. Exhibits were to be secured from individuals and organizations outside the Juneau area so that the exhibit would be more nearly representative of the work of the people throughout the Territory as well as interesting all the people in the tremendous possibilities for the development of the arts and crafts in Alaska.
In 1946, with Alice Brandebury acting as President, interest of individuals and groups throughout the Territory was so rewarding that the Executive Committee of the Exhibit voted to form a non-profit corporation, the Alaskan Arts and Crafts, Inc., to carry out the purposes formulated by the Committee and on a Territory-wide basis. Thus the Articles of Incorporation were filed in February of 1946.
