Biographical Note
Rosemary McVeigh Davis was a school teacher in several places in Southeast Alaska including possibly Treadwell, Juneau, Douglas, and Metlakatla. Rosemary spoke Tlingit, was made an honorary member of the ANS and was an adopted member of the raven tribe. She also traveled with the “fishing fleet” and taught at outlying schools. The donor relates from Stewart Davis’ stories of his mother that her heart was always in Alaska.
Stewart Davis was Rosemary’s son. He gave the photographs and other items to the donor. The dates on some of the photos are from 1920 to 1939. The other items are an Alaska Native Sisterhood (ANS) sash and photograph of Rosemary whom the donor gave to Daniel Smith who sold them to the Alaska State Museum.
