Scope and Contents

Includes views of Southeast Alaska, Juneau, Auke Village, Killisnoo, Chilkat, Sitka and Wrangell. Tlingit Indians in ceremonial dress, the Wolf and Bear House in Wrangell, and the Indian Training School in Sitka are also included.

Historical Note

Winter & Brown, headquartered in Eugene City, Oregon, traveled to Southeast Alaska during 1887 and photographed at least 203 scenes of Tlingit Indians, Juneau, Auke Village, mills at Treadwell, Sitka and Wrangell, Muir Glacier. Advertisements for their photographs were printed in the Alaskan, out of Sitka, and the Alaska Free Press (Juneau) selling boudoir and stereoscopic views at $.50 each or $4.00-$4.50 per dozen. Some time during 1888, the Winter Photo Company took up the advertisement in the Alaskan, described as “successors to Winter & Brown.” The address given from which to order the photographs was also Eugene City, Oregon.

The photographs were donated in 1970 by Mr. E.B. Depue of California. No accession number available.
