Scope and Contents

The collection includes transcripts of proceedings, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) documents, correspondence, and other documents pertinent to the Reid Bros. vs. ALP/KPC antitrust case and extends over the time period the lawsuit was in progress, 1980-1981. The papers were collected primarily by the donor, as a representative of the Sierra Club.

Historical

Reid Brothers vs. Alaska Lumber and Pulp Co. (subsequently Louisiana-Pacific-Ketchikan) and Ketchikan Pulp Co., an antitrust lawsuit, extended from 1980-1981. From a memo by Cliff Lobaugh to Friends of the Tongass [Friends of Admiralty Island] in late 1981, “the general issues of the litigation were dominance, conspiracy, and monopoly by ALP/KPC regarding several specific timber sales. The court ruled in favor of Reid Brothers, holding that the conduct of ALP/KPC constituted a combination and conspiracy in restrain[t] of trade and a conspiracy to monopolize trade in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act…” [Ms 184, Box 3, Folder 1].
