Content Description
Includes views of communities and community events, scenic views, petroglyphs, river steamboats (steamers), railroads, Alaska native culture. The first 41 photographs in this collection were taken by Mrs. Drake and have her notations. The remaining photo postcards are views of Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Her collection also includes a postcard (no. 35) carried by members of the New York to Nome Flying Expedition. Commercial photographers included in the collection: Winter & Pond, Lomen Bros., B.B. Dobbs, J. Hadley, Hewitt's Photo Shop, Heylen Photo, Case & Draper, and Frank H. Nowell.

Biographical / Historical
Claudia Marie Drake (nee Van Wert) came to Alaska in 1919 and became secretary to the first Commissioner of Education, Lester B. Henderson that same year. She was with the Territorial Department of Education from its establishment in 1919 until her retirement as Deputy Commissioner of Education in 1945. Marie visited schools throughout Alaska and edited the "Alaska School Bulletin" for many years. She wrote the "Alaska Flag," a poem set to music by Elinor Dusenbury and now the official flag song for Alaska. Claudia Marie Drake died in 1963.
