Joseph R. Werner Photograph Collection, 1936-1972
Scope and Contents
Images of the Juneau Ski Club, activities and members are shown in the Juneau and Douglas areas, and other skiing locations outside of Alaska. Contains a folder of information gathered during the planning and construction of Juneau's golf course, "the Million Dollar Golf Course," or "Sandblasters Club" first envisioned by Werner. Images of the wreck of the Princess Kathleen are included. Additional unidentified photographs of people, hunting and boating activities ("Ourluk") were added in 1995. A collection of color slides, donated in 2002, has not been processed.

Biographical Note
Born in Gleeds, Washington in 1909, Joseph Werner came to Alaska to work for the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in 1936. He started an accounting business after working ten years for the USFS. Mr. Werner helped develop sport activities like the Juneau Ski Club and baseball leagues; he organized the first Juneau Rescue Council and started the “million dollar golf course” (south of Juneau on crushed ore from the A.J. Mine, “the rock dump”). He was president of the Juneau Ski Club for two years, volunteer fireman, member of the Elks, and Pioneers of Alaska. He married Jennie Berg in Juneau in 1938 and they made Juneau their home until his death, May 8, 1972.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The photographs were donated in two parts. Volumes 1-3 were donated in the 1970s by Joseph R. Werner. Mrs. Jennie Werner, Seattle, WA, donated additional photographs in 1995 (Acc. No. 1995-051). A donation of color slides was received in 2002, from the estate of Karen Werner Ellis (Acc. No. 2002-32).

Some photographs in this collection have been digitized and are available to view via Alaska's Digital Archives.
Processing Information
The photos in box 1 have been numbered and placed in Mylar sleeves. A folder level inventory of the collection is available.
