Captain Lloyd H. “Kinky” Bayers Collection, 1898-1967 (bulk 1924-1967)

 Collection
Identifier: MS 10

Scope and Contents

The collection contains extensive files of information of personal interest to Capt. Bayers, which he obtained from individuals, Juneau newspapers (usually the Daily Alaska Dispatch and Daily Alaska Empire) and magazines, covering the early days of Alaska history up until his death in 1968.

The collection contains 291 spiral-bound notebooks, 28 scrapbooks and numerous manila envelopes with clippings about Juneau and other southeastern communities, local events, statistics, people, ships. In addition he typed information, anecdotes, and his own musings on 3x5” and 5x8” index cards. The collection also contains 28 photo albums of 5x7” black and white images and 44 photo postcard albums (also containing photographs.)

The card files are generally separated into 4 parts: Juneau Historical File, People, Miscellaneous Information and the General Marine File. The General Marine File is a major source of information on vessels of the Pacific Northwest, filed by vessel name. The Juneau Historical File also includes some references to marine vessels. His terminology is often colloquial, reflecting anecdotes and personal views. While the majority of people represented in the People card files have a Juneau relationship, Capt. Bayers included other Alaskans, early explorers, famous and notorious individuals. Information on individuals can also be found in the Clippings, the Spiral-Bound Notebooks, the Scrapbooks and Photo Albums. Often the information is indexed and sometimes cross-referenced from the card files. References to magazine articles may appear, for example, "A.S." is used for Alaska Sportsman, however, there is no key.

The collection guide contains an overview of the collection and of the series established by the library. Indexes, available for the Spiral Bound Notebooks, Clippings, Photo Albums and Scrapbooks, follow the overview. The 127 boxes were numbered, beginning with No. 1 in each of Series 1, 2 and 3. The total being 83 boxes, Series 4 begins with Box No. 84.

Biographical / Historical

Lloyd H. "Kinky" Bayers was born July 6, 1911 in Juneau to Vera Soboleff Bayers (daughter of Father John Soboleff) and Harry "Tay Bayers," a boatman from Maine, who came to Killisnoo with his two brothers and worked for the Alaska Oil and Guano Company, manufacturing oil and fertilizer from herring.

Lloyd and his five sisters attended school at Kake and Juneau. He was a member of the Juneau High School basketball team, played on the De Molay team and served as an official and judge for the annual Gold Medal Tournament. Most of Lloyd's life work was involved with the sea. He worked summers with his father on various boats towing logs, tending fish traps and general freighting. In January 1931, he worked as a deckhand on the ESTEBETH, the mail boat that ran between Juneau and Sitka and other boats. When his father died, in April 1932, he worked various jobs for the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company to support his mother and sisters. In 1939 he purchased the M.V. FORESTER, a former cannery tender, and did towing, freighting, and charter work. Later, Bayers became captain of the fish packer, PELICAN. In 1941, he joined the U.S. Army Transport Service and commanded various Army small vessels, mostly in Southeast Alaska waters. After the war, Capt. Bayers went to work for the U.S. Geological Survey’s Water Resources Division as master of the vessel, WATRES (formerly the ELISHA P. FERRY) transporting survey personnel in Southeast Alaska. He retired from this position in 1967 because of poor health and died of heart attack Mar. 5, 1968.

Captain Bayers was well known in Juneau, a local activist who often represented the underdog position. He opposed water meters for Juneau, the Alaska ferry system (as it was organized) urban renewal and the organization of borough Government. For many years the City Cafe in Juneau, known as the unofficial city council, served as a center for discussions on local topics and controversy and Bayers was a major participant. The source of his nickname is uncertain however it has been attributed to his involvement in controversies and alternatively to his habit of kinking the edges of playing cards. Processing Information

The entire collection is housed in 127 archival boxes. The original order was maintained; Mr. Bayers organized his information generally by format and subject. He also created separate indexes for parts of the collection.

The Juneau Historical File [index cards] and a file titled Buildings Homes, Fires, etc. [index cards] were consolidated. References to individuals in those files were transferred to the People card files. References to Juneau and individuals in an Alaska Historical File were transferred to the Juneau Historical File and People files. These two card files were photocopied and placed in binders (Reading Room). Minimal changes were made to headings for clarification.
