Biographical

Conrad W. Fries was born in Bavaria, March 4, 1851. He came to the United States when he was four years old. Conrad spent a large portion of his life in St. Louis. He and his wife Mary came to Alaska in 1905. They first lived in Windham Bay and then moved to Juneau. Mr. Fries invested in a number of mining ventures. In 1918 he and some associates secured an option on the Hirst-Chichagof property on Chichagof Island and were successful in financing it for exploration and development. He was also active in a fox farming enterprise. C.W. Fries owned considerable municipal property in Juneau and was involved in building the six homes known as the Fries Miners’ Cabins on Kennedy Street. Mr. Fries was also interested in civic affairs and served on the Juneau City Council for four terms. Conrad W. Fries passed away in San Diego, California, May 2, 1922, as he was returning to Juneau after visiting relatives in St. Louis.

The collection was donated by Conrad Fries, a relative of C.W. Fries, to the Alaska State Library Historical Collections September 13, 2006, and is accessioned as 2008-006.
