Dogs were very utilitarian and necessary as well as used in racing. Within a few years snowmobiles replaced dogs for many people as working vehicles.

Biographical / Historical
Dogs were a very important part of the town economy. Huslia's racers, starting with Jimmy Huntington became a real force in Alaska dog racing both in Fairbanks and Anchorage. Fishing for dog food in the summer was a serious business with the families and they moved out of town to fish camp when the fish were running.
