Myself [David Brower] with the cross cutting up my first whale I caught. Whaling is one of the most exciting sports that I know of in the arctic. It is done during the spring. All the men being on the ice for about a month and a half. The whale is first struck with a harpoon; attached to the harpoon is a seal skin poke as a float. Also with the harpoon is a gun which has a bomb which is shot into the whale, which explodes and either kills the whale or wounds it. If it’s wounded it is either bombed or lanced until it is dead, then it is hauled on the ice and cut up and taken ashore on dog teams. It takes about two days to cut and haul the whale ashore.
