Petroglyphs in Alaska Photograph Collection, ca. 1921-1959
Petroglyphs are carvings or inscriptions on rocks and are often called picture writing." These pictures represent human figures, animals, birds, fish and "Y" faces and were carved by the prehistoric inhabitants of Alaska.
Most petroglyphs are found along the ocean beach near salmon spawning streams.
Walter T. Phillips Photograph Collection, 1911-1918
The images depict Fairbanks and surrounding area; individuals, businesses, the Agricultural Experiment Station, floods; agriculture; schools and school children, 4th of July (1916), parades and other community activities. 1911-1918. Some views came from the Margaret Kennan Harrais Estates. Mrs. Harrais was the Superintendent of Schools in Fairbanks from 1916-1918 and wrote the unpublished manuscript, Alaska Periscope (Historical Collections, F909.H36).

At times the higher numbered images come before lower numbers because the photos or slides were received later, e.g., 1972, 1991. Collection is arranged in chronological order. Picturesque Alaska, ca. 1890s
The views of Wrangell, Juneau, Taku Inlet, and Taku, Windham, Davidson and Muir Glaciers, Sitka, The S.S. Queen, Tlinget (sic) totems and Tlinget (sic) Indians are mounted on boards in an album titled "Picturesque Alaska."
Pigg Family Photograph Collection, 1920s – 1950s
The Pigg family photos include photos of Dr. W.J. Pigg, his wife Lena and son Henry, and photos of Father Bernard R. Hubbard. Many of the photos were taken on the Mendenhall/Taku Glacier crossing by Henry Pigg, Father Hubbard, and Jack Koby. Additionally, there is also a photo of Babe Ruth in Juneau, and several glacier and mountain scenes. The photos date from 1914-1950s.
