United States Bureau of Land Management, Alaska State Office : Photographic Atlas of Alaskan Communities, circa 1950-1973

 Collection
Identifier: PCA 252-1

Scope and Contents

The atlas was prepared from aerial photographs on file at the Bureau of Land Management used in its various public land management responsibilities. Some of the aerial obliques came from the Federal Aviation Agency.

The images include Alaskan villages and communities photographed from 1950-1973. Each page contains the latitude and longitude and population figures based on the 1960 census. Post-1964 earthquake photographs of Seward, Valdez and Whittier are included. Updated images were received through the early 1970s; sometimes only the latest image was retained.

The images were received in an oversized binder. They were moved into 2 oversize boxes in June 2024. They are mostly organized alphabetically by location, with some sheets with up to 4 location images at the end. The atlas is located in PCA Oversize – PCA 252-1. There was also a copy of this atlas in the Alaska State Library Reference collection at G4370.A4U52 ATLAS CASE. The two atlases were combined to make one complete copy in June of 2024.
