Scope and Contents
[text of article:] Archdeacon Stuck’s Achievement. Many friends of the late Archdeacon Stuck will be interested in the announcement in THE TIMES that Messrs. Lindley and Strom are now engaged in an endeavor to duplicate the achievement of Archdeacon Stuck and his party in the ascent of the south peak of Mount McKinley. May their effort be completely successful! Those who would like to follow their perilous journey may be interested in reading Archdeacon Stuck’s account of his ascent in 1913. The story is told graphically, and yet with great restraint, in Dr. Stuck’s book, “The Ascent of Denali,” (Scribners). Denali is the Indian name for Mount McKinley. Of Archdeacon Stuck’s party, three are living: Harry Karstens is still a resident of Alaska, Robert G. Tatum is now a clergyman of the Episcopal Church in Marietta, Ga., and John Fredson, the Indian boy who kept the base camp, and whom the Archdeacon made famous as “the boy who did not eat the sugar,” lives in Fort Yukon. Walter Harper, the half-breed Indian youth in whose honor Harper Ridge was named, died in 1918, through the sinking of the Princess Sophia, near Juneau. In 1920, after sixteen years of arduous service, Archdeacon Stuck died at his home in Fort Yukon, amid the Indian people for whom he had sacrificed so much. The scientific data concerning the ascent of 1913 are now in the safe keeping of the New York Geographical Society. -JOHN W. WOOD, New York.
