Historical

From donor’s notes, 10/11/1990: “These glass plates were made to be seen with a special “Magic Lantern.” Thomas Jackson (a Friend (Quaker) born in Hockessin Del., worked for the Pennsylvania R.R. He and my Grandmother Anna Ruth Chandler, also from Hockessin, lived in Ft. Wayne, Ind. and made a trip to Alaska: Juneau, Sitka, etc., in 1890 (approx.) and took pictures from which he made these slides.

Subsequently traveled frequently by train “up” to Chicago Exposition (Worlds Fair) where he took many pictures and prepared the slides. Fair - 1893.”

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The slides were donated in 1990 by a donor whose name is unknown at this time. The donor’s grandmother was Anna Ruth Chandler of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Acc. # 2015-008.

The photographs in this collection have been digitized and are available to view via Alaska's Digital Archives. 1 folder of photo prints from lantern slides
