Walter W. Lukens Collection, ca. 1916-1925
Scope and Contents
Boxes 1 and 2 of this collection contain black and white photographs and postcards of Juneau, Valdez, Nome, and other areas of Alaska during the years 1916 to 1925. Box 3 contains federal publications, letters, brochures, maps, and a Juneau Cook book from the time period 1912 to 1927.

Biographical
Walter W. Lukens was born January 28, 1883, in Hardy, Sharpe County, Arkansas. He moved to Ukiah, California, where he graduated from grade school in 1902. Later Mr. Lukens attended Lincoln Night School in San Francisco, California, where he received degrees in Architectural I.C.S. and Civil Engineering I.C.S.
During his stay in Alaska, Mr. Lukens was employed by the Alaska Engineering Commission as a bridge erector from 1916-1919. He was employed by the Alaska Road Commission as superintendent from 1920-1925.
Walter met a waitress in the Arcade Restaurant in Juneau, Alaska. Linda Drabe and Walter were married in Seattle, Washington, on November 25, 1925. After his retirement on May 2, 1927, Walter and Linda Lukens purchased and moved to Linda’s parent’s homestead at Rainier, Washington, where they had a dairy farm.
Walter died on March 10, 1954, and is buried at Masonic cemetery, Tumwater, Washington.

This collection was donated by Joan M. Bailey, Walter and Linda Lukens’ niece, in July of 1998. Acc. No. 1998-039.
Processing Information
The prints have been placed in acid free envelopes and then into archival boxes. Many of the original negatives remain unprinted.
