Biographical Note
Henry Roden came to Alaska, around the turn of the century, to mine and prospect. He later became interested in law and built a practice that focused on mining laws. Roden compiled the mining laws for Alaska and proposed changes to them.
In 1913 Henry Roden was one of eight senators elected to the first territorial legislature. Over the following years Mr. Roden ran for a variety of elected positions. He was successful in 1940 when he was elected Attorney General for Alaska. Henry Roden also served as treasurer in 1949, filling an unexpired term, and was reelected in 1952 for a 4 year term.
One of his achievements, as a Senator in 1913, was his introduction of Senate Bill No. 1 of the First Territorial Senate. It provided for an eight hour work day in mines and mining operations and became law.
Henry Roden was known widely throughout the territory of Alaska. “He was a true Alaskan,” said Governor Egan.
