Art Kaufman Photograph Collection, 1940-1955
Scope and Contents
The images document Captain Kaufman’s life as a pilot in the Air Force during the 1940s in Alaska and Europe. Some of the images may have been taken after he left the service. Images include the 73rd Bombing Squadron leaving Seattle, March 1941, Anchorage, snowshoeing, military aircraft and pilots, airborne infantrymen, “Dottie” (airplane), military life, Annette Island, Atka Island, Shishaldin Volcano, Shishmaref Crater and images from France and Switzerland. Kaufman captioned most of the images in the scrapbook and most individuals are identified.

Biographical Note
Arthur Kaufman was born in San Francisco, June 10, 1919. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II as a pilot in the Aleutian Islands. After WWII, he attended the University of Geneva and spoke fluent French. Kaufman never married and spent most of his life in the military. He died in the Veterans Home (for military) of California in Yountville September 1989 from Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The photos were donated November 19, 1991 by Art Kaufman’s long-time friends, George and Pam McGinn of Oakland, California. (Acc. No. 1991-063).
