Naknek Air Base Collection, 1944
Scope and Contents
The photographs were taken by Lee Lucas who worked with Robert Fleek at the Supply Quonset in Juneau. Lucas previously had worked as a professional photographer for Ordway and Lu-Eck. Photos include buildings, personnel, aircraft, aerials, and activities at the Naknek Air Base in 1944. According to Fleek, Naknek Air Base is now King Salmon.

Biographical Note
Robert D. Fleek was born in 1923 in Inspiration, AZ. He moved to Douglas, AK with his family at age 11 and graduated from Douglas High School in 1941. He worked on a project to enlarge the Juneau airport hauling rock from the A-J Mine rock dump to the airport area in 1942. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. Fleek was assigned to the Supply Quonset at the Juneau Airport. In July 1944 he was transferred to Naknek Air Base. He was a member of the Arizona Army National Guard until his retirement in 1983. He died in Arizona, November 8, 2002.

The collection was donated in 2001 by Robert D. Fleek of Phoenix AZ, Acc. #2001-88.

Photos were numbered and housed in Mylar. Donor labeled photos.
