Robert DeArmond photographed and cataloged advertisements and illustrations from early Alaska newspapers. Topics range from business ads to images and engravings from books, pamphlets and ephemera about Alaska. This collection includes newspaper mastheads, newspaper flags, Tlingit and other Alaskan Native designs, illustrations, cartoons, maps.

The negatives are stored in envelopes. However, patrons must use the hard copies and prints of negatives to preserve the negatives. Original prints may not be photocopied.

Biographical Note

R.N. "Bob" DeArmond was born in Sitka, Alaska in July 1911. Bob DeArmond was an Alaska historian who published numerous articles and books about Alaska's history and culture. He lived in Sitka, Alaska, with his wife, well-known artist, Dale DeArmond. Robert DeArmond passed away in Sitka November 26, 2010.

Acquisition

R. N. Bob DeArmond donated the collection in April, 1981 (Acc. no. 1983-013).

Processing Information

Verda Carey matched hard copy images with the negatives. A 34-page inventory lists the topics and advertisements. However, the categories range from specific to broad in scope. Carey also compiled a summary list by set number and paper copies available. Researchers should meet with the librarian before using the collection.
