Scope and Contents

Exxon Valdez Papers, 1987-1990. Guides and documents accompanying the 104 Video Recordings (AV 025) related to the Exxon Valdez oil spill, 1989-1991, documented by the State of Alaska Governor’s Office. The guides are descriptions of the 335 VHS tapes and 2,018 slides located in the Alaska State Archives, Record Group 348 Series 612.

Historical

On March 24, 1989, the tanker Exxon Valdez grounded on Bligh Reef in Alaska's Prince William Sound. The accident ruptured the ship’s hull and spilled nearly 11 million gallons of oil into the Sound. Prior to the spill, that area of Prince William Sound was a biologically and economically productive body of water and shoreline.

Biographical

Steve Nelson filmed, edited, produced, and compiled Exxon Valdez spill-related footage for Governor Steve Cowper’s Office. He worked for the Governor’s office on all other projects in this collection as well, with the exception of some of the publications.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was donated by Steve Nelson to the Alaska State Library Historical Collections, November 21, 2011. Accession #2015-030. A separate donation to the Alaska State Archives was made by Governor Cowper’s office March, 1989. See also: AV 025 - Exxon Valdez Video Collection, 1987-1990.
