Biographical Note
John W. Troy worked in the newspaper field and as a county official in Clallam County, Washington before coming to Alaska. From 1897 1907 Troy was publisher and editor of the Skagway Daily Alaskan, then publisher and editor of the Alaska-Yukon Magazine from 1911 1912. He became editor of the Daily Alaska Empire in Juneau in 1913 and its owner in 1914. From 1919 to 1922 he served as Collector of Customs for the District of Alaska. In April 1933, Troy was appointed Alaska's Twelfth governor serving through 1939. Troy died May 2, 1942 and is buried in Juneau.
While publisher of the Alaska Daily Empire, Troy investigated the birth record and personal history of Governor J.F.A. Strong of Alaska. He discovered Strong to be a Canadian citizen and not qualified to be Governor of Alaska.
