Biographical Note

H.A. (Heath Arlo) Ives was born in 1890 in Minneapolis. He lived on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and in Bellingham, WA. In 1907 he came to Katalla, Alaska to work as an engineer on a gas boat that ferried supplies for the Alaska Railroad. He quit after a dispute with a railroad foreman and walked 60 miles to the village of Eyak, now Cordova. While there, his left arm was crippled by a shotgun in a hunting accident.

At Cordova he started a small gasoline engine repair business; he also learned photography. It was during this time he acquired the nickname “Gasoline Red.”

In 1923 he moved to Hyder, Alaska. Here he set up business as a commercial photographer and sold his photos as postcards of the area. After his mother died in 1941 at Hyder, Ives moved to Wrangell for one year and then to Petersburg. He worked as a photographer, small engine repairman, and gunsmith until his retirement. Ives died in Petersburg, December 16, 1972.
