Historical Note
F.B. Bourn served as a clerk in the office of the Secretary of War. In 1899, he accompanied Major John Tweedale, U.S. Army, from Seattle to Skagway and Sitka, Alaska, to obtain information for the Secretary of War from 10 Chilkat Indian Chiefs and sub-chiefs around Klukwan, Alaska.
George Kostrometinoff served as interpreter for these testimonies, which provided information on the tribes’ contacts with Russians before the purchase and facts relative to the Alaska/Canadian boundary settlement.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The collection was donated by Sen. Ted Stevens, Feb. 10, 1977. E. Bourn found the envelope when she was cleaning out her Washington, D.C. home and gave them to Sen. Stevens in 1969. F. B. Bourn may have been her father. (Acc. No. 1977-025).
