Scope and Contents
The three letters, February through May, 1898, from Seattle, Washington; Copper City [Old Valdez], Alaska; and Lake Tasnuna, Alaska, respectively, were written to the editor of the Freeport, Illinois, newspaper, The Freeport Journal. Members of the party included Lute Guiteau, Philo Snow, William Becker, and Ed Kingsley.

Biographical
Edward Daniel Kingsley, born in Freeport, Illinois in 1869, attended Washington University in St. Louis and married Charlotte Wright in 1891. In 1898, he joined the gold rush to the Klondike. In 1900, he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he founded West-Oregon Lumber Co., dying there in 1940.
