Biographical Note

The photographs in this collection are from the period that John Weir Troy (1868-1942) was Governor of the Alaska Territory, from 1933-1939. Troy was a democrat, and was preceded by George Alexander Parks, a Republican and succeeded by Ernest Gruening, a Democrat. According to Port Angeles Evening News obituaries collected and posted online by the Clallam County Historical Society on Pioneer Families of Clallam County, Troy was “[a]ppointed Governor of Alaska by President Roosevelt in May, 1933, Troy occupied that position until ill health forced him to resign 2 years ago. For many years publisher of the Daily Alaska Empire, Troy was a dominant figure in democratic politics and was collector of customs for the territory under the administration of President Wilson.” For more biographical information on the Troy family, see the Clallam County Historical Society Web site: http://www.olypen.com/rfoss/pioneerfam.html.
